In search of lost habits:

“The Habit (the traditional uniform for a nun) has long been the subject of much controversy in the Catholic Church and amongst women’s religious communities. The stance of radical Nuns in the 60′s was to modify the habit and assert their independence from the Pope. Contemporary Nuns make this personal decision with greater freedom, but sewing patterns for these habits were lost and ceased to be produced.”

Artist Julia Sherman referred back to the “Nun Doll” to reconstruct the missing sewing patterns and arrive at the full-size habit. Download pattern here. In 2011, Sherman designed and produced the “Community of Compassion” clothing line, in collaboration with JF&Son.

Read about Sherman’s previous preoccupation in Triple Canopy: “She Goes Covered” follows the global hair trade, from the braid-laden Peruvian highlands to the sheitel machers of Borough Park.

About

Triple Canopy is an online magazine, workspace, and platform for editorial and curatorial activities. Working collaboratively with writers, artists, and researchers, Triple Canopy facilitates projects that engage the Internet’s specific characteristics as a public forum and as a medium, one with its own evolving practices of reading and viewing, economies of attention, and modes of interaction. In doing so, Triple Canopy is charting an expanded field of publication, drawing on the history of print culture while acting as a hub for the exploration of emerging forms and the public spaces constituted around them. Triple Canopy is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization.
